What's the difference between View File and Download File?

View FileĀ tells the browser we would like to open the file with a helper application if it's type is registered with the browser. If a helper application is not available, the browser will just download the file.

To view specific types of files, you need a helper application registered with your browser. A desktop browser requires you register a specific app to handle the file type e.g: Microsoft Office (or OpenOffice.org etc) as the helper application for your browser when it sees an office document.

Because we have no way of forcing the browser to do what we want (this is a security feature of browsers so apps can't execute malicious code) we "advise" the browser what we intend to happen with the file (either View if available or Download regardless of a plug-in)

Download FileĀ forces the browser to save the file to your computer regardless of whether a help application is registered or not.
